Major New Discoveries
The Underexplored Southeast Offers Great Opportunity
The Carolina Slate Belt extends from Virginia to Georgia and consists of Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic, volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks deposited in an island arc/back arc rift setting. This terrane contains the largest gold deposits in the eastern United States. Significant gold discoveries here in recent years include the Ridgeway Mine (1.5 million oz) operated in the 1990s and the major new ore bodies at the historic Haile Mine (+4 million oz gold) in South Carolina. OceanaGold commenced production at Haile in 2017 and is currently producing approximately 150,000 ounces of gold each year.
Relatively limited exploration has been conducted in the Southeast in modern times and great potential exists for new discoveries in mineralized terranes known to contain world-class deposits.
